Wegovy is a weight loss medication licensed for the management of obesity and weight gain. Since its launch in the UK on September 4th 2022, it has received a great deal of attention from the press and on social media channels, following the success of clinical trials and personal stories from people who have tried it.

What is Wegovy?
Wegovy is an injectable weight loss management medication containing semaglutide, prescribed to people with a BMI of 30+. This criterion can be reduced to a BMI of 27 for those with a weight related comorbid condition including hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnea or certain ethnic origins.
How does Wegovy work?
Wegovy works by mimicking GPL-1 which is a gut hormone that’s released after eating, slowing down the movement of food, ultimately making you feel full, which suppresses your appetite and causes you to eat less.
How long does it take to lose weight?
Weight loss on Wegovy is steady and starts in the first month. Studies show that patients can lose an average of 5% body weight within a month, as the medication reduces hunger, meaning you eat fewer calories [1]. As semaglutide is a long acting medication, weight continues to decrease as the dosage increases, with real results starting to be seen after 3 months.
How much weight will I lose?
Studies conducted on semaglutide, an active ingredient in Wegovy, have yielded positive results, concluding that those taking the medication can expect to see up to a 15% reduction in body weight after a year [2]. In support, a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine of 1961 adults with a BMI of 30+ showed a weight loss of 14.9% after 68 weeks of treatment [3].
We recognise however that everyone’s weight loss journey is unique and it is a combination of medication and changes to lifestyle and diet that bring the best results. How do I administer Wegovy?
Wegovy is prescribed as an injectable pen that you self administer once a week. Doses are increased gradually over time which allows you to get used to the medication and serves to lessen side effects.
Wegovy dosage
The dosage is clearly marked on the pens which are also colour coded for ease and safety.
Each pack of Wegovy pens that you receive holds a new dosage. Dosage increases on a monthly basis as follows:
