Obesity is defined as having too much body fat, obesity can impair health. 

It’s typically assessed using the body mass index (BMI), a measure of whether an individual is a healthy weight for their height. Here are the BMI ranges: 

  • Underweight: BMI below 18.5 

  • Healthy weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9 

  • Overweight: BMI 25 to 29.9 

  • Obese: BMI 30 or above 

  • Severely obese: BMI 40 or above 

Note for individuals with certain ethnic backgrounds (Asian, Chinese, Black African, Middle Eastern, or African Caribbean different BMI ranges apply) 

 

Health Risks: Obesity increases the risk of several health conditions, including: 

  • Type 2 diabetes 

  • Coronary heart disease 

  • Certain cancers (such as breast and bowel cancer) 

  • Stroke 

  • Liver disease 

  • High blood pressure 

  • High cholesterol 

  • Sleep apnoea 

  • Mental Health problems including depression and low self esteem 

 

Causes: Obesity has multiple causes, including genetic factors, lifestyle choices, and environmental influences. Responsibility and Prevention: Some argue that defining obesity as a disease increases society’s responsibility to prevent excess weight gain. Interventions are essential to promote health and prevent obesity.
