Can you skip doses of weight loss medication while on holiday?

Hotel and beach

People on social media are discussing skipping doses of weight loss drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro while on holiday to enjoy more food and drinks. However, experts strongly advise against this practice, stating that taking a pause from such medications during holidays is "a particularly bad idea."

One of the side effects of drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro is increased fullness after meals. This can make indulging in holiday treats challenging, which is part of why these drugs are effective for weight loss. Missing a dose or two of these medications can have significant consequences.

Experts emphasise the importance of following the medication guidelines closely. Skipping doses can increase the likelihood of side effects when restarting the medication and can reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.

Injectable GLP-1 agonist drugs like Mounjaro and Wegovy can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhoea, especially when first starting the medication. These side effects usually diminish over time as the patient adjusts to the medication. However, stopping the medication for a period and then resuming it can bring back these initial side effects, particularly if they were severe initially.  What’s more, taking a break from these medications without consulting your weight loss provider can necessitate dosing adjustments when you start up again.

If you feel you don't need the medication while on holiday because you want to eat and drink more, you should reconsider whether you should be on the medication in the first place. Holidays season will always come and go and eventually, you will need to stop the medication, so it's crucial to focus on long term lifestyle changes.

Enjoying your holiday doesn't mean you can't enjoy your favorite foods and drinks; it means you need to be more mindful and in control of your choices. Aiming to maintain your current body weight rather than trying to lose weight during the holiday can be a more achievable goal. The holidays can present challenges with food choices and routines, so setting realistic expectations and planning can be beneficial.

Just to re-cap the important bits!

While it may be tempting to take a break from weight loss medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro during holidays, doing so can lead to unwanted side effects and reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. It's important to follow the prescribed medication schedule and consult with your weight loss provider before making any changes. Focus on mindful eating and maintaining your weight during holidays to ensure long-term success in your weight loss journey.
